The delightful middle Goeltzsch valley

The middle göltzsch valley from Lengenfeld to Mylau/Netzschkau (whose approximate center is Muehlwand) has become a popular area for recreation and leisure activities in recent years. From a geological point of view, this western Saxon floodplain landscape is the easternmost part of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. Rocky slopes and gentle meadow hills, dark forests and open valley expansions alternate here in a very charming way.
Along the 10 km long cycle and hiking path with numerous branches there are - apart from our visitor mine - many other small and large destinations for nature and culture friends, those looking for relaxation and recreational athletes. A visit from afar is therefore always worthwhile - either as a day trip or during a tourist stay in the Vogtland.
More on this in the article below : ⊕ The 'Vogtland Panorama Weg' (panorama path)

Around Muehlwand ...

... is worth to visit: The 'Kaeppels Flossteiche' (raft ponds): a small, child-friendly leisure facility in the middle of nature, only around 1000 meters from Muehlwand. There are numerous resting places with delightful views, a nature trail about the river, the 'Flossteich-snack' (kiosk), Pond rafts for rent and the opportunity to spend the night close to nature. Everything is very carefully integrated into nature.

... there were still gold panning fields 500 years ago. This is still evident today by a few rows of old rubble heaps and a small search tunnel from 1711 in the steep bank, about 1 km upstream. You can find out more about this in the remarkable Buchwald 'Gold Museum and Natural History Cabinet' (2.5 km). The operator of these also offers guided tours with gold panning and courses to do so.

Mylau (2,5 km)
Here it's worth taking a look at and into the neo-Gothic town church and visiting the castle. It was once owned by Charles IV of the Luxembourg family (* 14.05.1316 in Prague). He was King of Bohemia from 1347 and German Emperor from 1355 († 29.11.1378 in Prague). The museum housed here shows an exhibition on the castle and regional history.

Netzschkau (3 km)
In addition to a late Gothic castle, the Goeltzschtalbruecke (göltzsch valley railway viaduct rsp. bridge) is particularly worth a visit. This huge structure is 574 m long, 78 m high and was built from 1846 to 1851 for the first Saxon-Bavarian Railway. It is still considered the largest stone arch bridge in the world (in terms of construction volume). Like her 'little sister', the somewhat smaller Elstertal bridge near Jocketa (see below), it is one of the most famous landmarks of the Vogtland and a technical monument of world class.

Reichenbach (4 km)
In the 'large district town' there is a museum about the theater reformer Friederike Caroline Neuber (* March 9, 1697, † November 30, 1760) in the house where she was once born. In the city center there are two bronze sculptures by the sculptor Wolfgang Mattheuer ('Leipziger Schule'), who is also a son of the town. The 'Park of Generations' is also worth a visit. It was created on the occasion of the Saxon Horticultural Show in 2009 on the site of a former industrial wasteland. The modern facility also offers children plenty of space and play enjoi.

⊕ The princely seat of greiz | show ⇓

After another 7 km (10 km from the Muehlwand) the Goeltzsch flows into the Weisse Elster near Greiz in the Thuringian Vogtland. The former princely seat of the Reuss dynasty even has three castles and a beautiful park.
The castle mountain with the Upper castle is characteristic of the city. It was rebuilt in renaissance style after a fire in 1540, expanded in the 18th century and contains, among other things, a modern museum on the history of the principality. The Lower Castle in the city center was renovated in the classicist style also after a fire in 1802 and houses a local museum today. The 'Fuerstlich (princely) Greizer Park' in the English style is one of the most beautiful landscape parks in Thuringia. In it lies the Sommerpalais (summer palace) with some attractive showrooms, the princely library, a collection of copper engravings and the 'Satiricum' (collection of caricatures).

The other is a pretty covered wooden bridge where the bike and hiking trail crosses the river. From it branch off in Weißensand attractive circular route variants, the length of which can be selected as required: to Lengenfeld via Wolfspfütz, around the Lohberg with wide views or to the Perlaser observation tower near Treuen.

+ The 'Vogtland Panorama Weg'

The section of the cycling and hiking trail along the Goeltzsch from Mylau over Muehlwand to Weißensand is part of the 'Vogtland Panorama Weg' (panorama way). It begins at the large Goeltzsch valley bridge and first leads through the equally attractive, but narrower and more wooded lower Goeltzsch valley to Greiz and from there up the valley of the White Elster to the upper Vogtland and back.

This 242 km long circular route through the Saxon (and part of the Thuringian) Vogtland was awarded the seal of approval "Quality Trail Wanderable Germany" in 2005 and 2008. Of course, there are also sections for shorter tours.

⊕ Vogtlaendische Schweiz | show ⇓

Enthusiastic homeland friends named the wild romantic valley of the Trieb and its surroundings as 'Vogtland Switzerland' as early as the 19th century. At the end of the approximately 2 km long, winding valley way, at the confluence of the Trieb into the White Elster near Jocketa, there is standing the "little" sister of the Goeltzschtal viaduct: the Elstertalbruecke. It is also a great railway bridge an an important technical monument: Built: 1846-51, length: 279 m, height: 68 m in two floors, span of the large arches: 31.1 meters.
